The following is information about the Sony-Ericsson UIQ3 phone models P990 and P1i.
If you are using only the standard applications that come with the phone you probably won't notice it, but with a flexible tool like MoStacks it becomes obvious, and in the particular case of MoStacks even a problem that can get in the way: SE's UIQ3 phones have exactly one built-in font called Sans-Serif Latin.
The font can render in many different sizes, and in bold as well as in italic, but it's always only one font design, a simple and plain sans-serif font.
Fortunately, improving this situation is possible because UIQ3 supports TrueType and OpenType, and you should be able to use most TrueType fonts (recognizable by the file name extension of .ttf.) that you can find in your Windows font folder C:\Windows\Fonts or on the Internet.
Note that with TrueType there are usually groups of font files, one for plain (e.g. arial.ttf, one for bold (arialbd.ttf), one for italics (ariali.ttf) and probably one for bold+italics (arialbi.ttf). If you want to use font attributes like bold, you have to install the whole group.
Installing the fonts is a little tricky because there is no proper font install procedure offered by UIQ3 itself. A short installation guide for the P1i:
- Get hold of a group of suitable TrueType font files.
- Connect the P1i to your PC, using the USB craddle, in file transfer mode.
- Check wether there is already a folder D:\Resource\Fonts on your memory stick, by using some file management tool like the Windows Explorer on the drive that is used to address the memory stick, and if not, create this folder
- Copy the font files into that D:\Resource\Fonts folder.
- Restart the phone.
